Calculate:

Debt to equity ratio = Total debt ÷ Shareholders’ funds

The calculator returns a dimensionless decimal ratio for one reporting date. Multiply it by 100 to express it in percentage form.

For example, decimal form 0.80 equals percentage form 80%, or $0.80 of debt for each $1.00 of equity. The sign convention assumes positive debt and positive equity.

What Does the Result Mean?

Result: The ratio describes the balance between creditor funding and owner funding.

Interpretation: A lower ratio generally reflects less leverage, while a higher ratio reflects more leverage. Neither result determines business quality by itself.

Decision rule: Classify the result as low versus peers, near the peer midpoint, or high versus peers using companies with similar operations and accounting policies. A high result may indicate greater exposure to interest costs and refinancing risk relative to that comparison group.

A lower result may indicate more conservative funding relative to peers, although it can also reflect limited use of borrowing.

Check whether the numerator includes only interest-bearing debt or all liabilities. Those approaches produce different ratios.

Also review income, interest coverage, liquidity, and cash flow because accounting profit is not the same as cash available to repay borrowings. These checks provide the context required for the ratio methodology.

Methodology, Assumptions, and Limitations

The methodology divides total interest-bearing borrowings by shareholders’ equity using balance-sheet values from the same reporting date.

D/E = D ÷ E

Where:

  • D = short-term and long-term interest-bearing borrowings, measured in currency units at the reporting date.
  • E = shareholders’ funds, measured in the same currency units for the same entity and reporting date.
  • D/E = debt equity ratio, expressed in decimal form or percentage form.

Both inputs must use the same currency, entity boundary, accounting basis, and timing. The sign convention assumes positive borrowings and positive shareholders’ funds.

The ratio calculator does not adjust automatically for leases, preferred shares, off-balance-sheet obligations, market-value capitalisation, or industry-specific accounting.

If equity is zero, the ratio is undefined. If equity is negative, the mathematical result can be negative, but it is usually not economically comparable with a standard positive ratio.

Example: Assume a business reports $600,000 of total interest-bearing debt and $750,000 of shareholders’ funds. Both amounts use the same currency, entity boundary, accounting basis, and year-end reporting date.

  1. Divide borrowings by owner funding: $600,000 ÷ $750,000 = 0.80.
  2. Decimal form: 0.80.
  3. Percentage form: 0.80 × 100 = 80%.

Result: The debt to equity ratio is 0.80 in decimal form or 80% in percentage form.

Interpretation: The business reports $0.80 of borrowings for each $1.00 of owner funding. This result may indicate moderate or high leverage only when compared with similar companies using the same accounting basis and reporting period.

Decision rule: Compare 0.80 with the peer range and the business’s ratios from earlier reporting periods, then cross-check its ability to service debt using interest coverage, liquidity, and cash flow.

For a contrasting case, assume debt remains $600,000 but shareholders’ funds fall to $500,000 after losses. The ratio becomes 1.20 in decimal form, or 120% in percentage form.

Change this assumption and the result moves because a smaller capital base supports the same borrowing. The increase from 0.80 to 1.20 may indicate greater leverage relative to the original case, but the decision still depends on peer comparisons and the business’s cash available for debt service.
